Yu Sun, a renowned designer, has created a groundbreaking solution to the age-old problem of finding the right size when shopping for shoes and gloves online. With his innovative Augmented Reality Measure, he has revolutionized the way we shop for these accessories, making the process efficient and hassle-free.
The uniqueness of this design lies in its ability to use artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize the user's hand or foot and then apply ARkit to measure 3D data. The algorithm provides insights for a better measurement experience that cannot be achieved with a simple ruler. This product is specifically designed for safety products and kids wear, which have unique sizing requirements compared to regular adult clothing. Additionally, it offers data statistics and records for sourcing and parents, as well as unit conversion for convenient purchasing from overseas. It even includes palm and foot circumference measurement, ensuring a comprehensive sizing solution.
The realization of this design involved a user-centered design process, following UX design principles. Yu Sun and his team creatively applied techniques such as UE workshops, full-link design, rapid prototyping, user experience evaluation, and agile software design and development. This comprehensive approach ensured that the final product met the needs and expectations of its users.
When using the Augmented Reality Measure app, the user simply launches the app and points the camera at their hand or foot. The app then automatically measures the width, length, palm circumference, and other parameters for hands, or the width, length, and height of the instep for feet. With just a single button tap, the app recommends the correctly fitting gloves or shoes, complete with global unit conversion. Users can also record the information for future reference or statistics.
The Augmented Reality Measure project started in July 2017 in Shanghai, and the first version of the app was released in February 2018. The team is currently planning a second version that will be integrated into another platform for future release.
One of the main challenges faced during the development of this design was building trust with shoppers. Convincing them to rely on the app's recommendations required showing them the parameters of their hand or foot, which closely matched their sizes. Additionally, the technical challenge of image recognition and measurement was overcome by utilizing Augmented Reality without relying on image contrast. While this approach is user-friendly, it required extensive training for the AI-based measurement system.
The Augmented Reality Measure app is not only a practical solution for online shoppers but also a precious memory for parents. They can record their children's sizes as they grow, creating a lasting memento of their little ones' milestones.
This groundbreaking design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design category in 2019. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Augmented Reality Measure app has been praised for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to users while contributing to a better world.
